Hindustan Motors (HM), the Indian automaker, known for its iconic Ambassador cars, is eyeing a major comeback, but this time as an electric vehicle manufacturer.
The company has joined hands with a European car manufacturer for making electric scooters at its Uttarpara plant in West Bengal, Initially, the company will focus on launching an electric scooter, but manufacturing electric cars at a later stage has not been ruled out.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between HM and the European company, the name of which has not been divulged. The definitive agreement would be signed another year, a source in the know of the development,
Uttam Bose, the director of Hindustan Motors, told TOI that if everything went according to plans, the plant, where the last Ambassador was rolled out in 2014, will again start making cars. However, the plant will first be making two-wheelers before moving on to cars.
