In this video we will build a realistic Curtain Shader that behaves correctly with your lighting. For this we will discuss the basics of how to setup your geometry. Then we will explore the differences in shading for thick and thin curtains. For the final photorealistic look we will implement Translucency which allows the light to shine through the fabric and appear on the backside of your curtains.

โ
Geometry Differences: 2 Different ways of setting up the Geometry of your Curtains
โ
Base Shader: Use Sheen Effects to create more soft looking fabrics that render faster
โ
Translucency: Use Translucency Effects such as Subsurface Scattering (SSS) to make light pass through curtains realistically
โ
Shadows: Use Transparency Textures or Translucency to brighten up Shadows
I am using 3ds Max and V-Ray 7 in this demo but you can also use identical techniques for in other software such as Cinema4d, Maya, Blender and different kind of render engine such as Corona, Octane, Redshift, Arnold, Cycles, Eevee and countless others.
