Verde River Stand Up Paddleboarding as part of Follow the Flood, an eleven part series of the first descent of the entire Verde River on SUP. This final episode travels from the base of Bartlett Dam, to the Granite Reef Recreation area on the Salt River. The 2023 floods overwhelmed the dams forcing me to hold up as Bartlett was releasing 40000cfs. Luckily soon after my arrival the dam was closed, resulting in barely enough water to finish what was approximately a 200 mile trip that took place over 57 days. Despite a typical time of 15 to 25 days to travel such distance, at times weeks had to be spent either pinned down at camp riverside, or doing the best I could to document the historic flood. By the time I finished the seasons had changed, the rivers had dropped, the environment was totally different and this helped to experience the diversity of the desert southwest and hopefully these contrasts allow those not having seen the Verde River to have some of that experience through this Follow the Flood series.
