The interactions between viruses and their hosts can be generally considered acute or persistent. In this lecture we define the properties of acute infections - rapid onset of virus reproduction, a brief but potentially severe course of disease followed by resolution, and illustrate them with five examples: influenza virus, poliovirus, measles virus, norovirus, and West Nile virus.
