Once a fishing port supplying fish to Helston, Porthleven is very much a tourist favourite. The harbour is protected by a breakwater stretching out into the bay, with superb views back to the unique Bickford-Smith Scientific and Literary Institute, once build as a reading room and now the home of the town council.
Every year the town hosts a food festival attracting thousands of visitors to sample Cornish products. It offers a wide variety of cafes and restaurants including a Rick Stein's fish and chip cafe.
The walk starts near First Downs car park on the South West Coast Path, passing through the older fisherman's cottages to the pier and breakwater near the Bickford-Smith Institute. Finally wandering around the harbour finishing just after the Ship Inn.
