The Sweetest Gift is a song written by gospel composer James B. Coats in 1942. It was recorded by Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris for their 1987 album Trio. The song is about a mother visiting her son in prison and bringing him a rose as a symbol of her love ¹². The song was also performed by Linda Ronstadt with Emmylou Harris on harmony vocal for her 1975 album Prisoner In Disguise ³.
