►Replacing your Mk5 GTI's failing thermostat will save the engine from severe damage. Although the water pump and radiator get all the attention in the cooling system, the thermostat also plays a large role. The engine in your Mk5 GTI needs to reach operating temperature to perform as intended, and the thermostat prevents coolant circulation until that happens. Unfortunately, a failing thermostat can either prevent coolant from circulating when stuck closed or prevent the engine from reaching its operating temp when stuck open.
