Take a look at the characters for 'Taiwan' 臺灣 vs. 台湾 - The first is in traditional Chinese characters or 繁体字 fántǐ zì and the latter in simplified 简体字 jǐantǐ zì - Sure, having less strokes to a character may make it faster to write, but that's not all you should be taking into consideration when you're deciding whether or not to learn the traditional or simplified characters. With each stroke, you may be also making a political statement - in this clip I go over five key things to consider when deciding on what style of characters to learn / use and hopefully will give you a new perspective on Chinese writing.
