The Valkyrie is the apotheosis of romantic music drama, and Richard Wagner delivers his most passionate pages. The curtain has barely opened when the orchestra sweeps everything away in its path. Storm, incest, divine wrath, irrepressible passion: everything seems to be already in the making in these agitated measures that announce the tortuous destiny of the heroes. Then, thanks to his perpetually mobile writing, in which each instrument takes part in the tragedy, Wagner begins the story proper, illuminating words and scenes with his famous "leitmotifs" (leading themes) that run under the singers, pass through their voices, transform and reappear as the plot develops. The second part of the Ring of the Nibelung (of which The Rhine Gold is the prologue, Siegfried and Twilight of the Gods the final days), The Valkyrie is the most popular and the most moving of this Ring; in short, the ideal work to plunge into the Wagnerian cauldron ... and not to come out again! Chopin, during a trip to Poland, stopped in an inn and fascinated his audience by playing on an old and badly tuned piano. It doesn't matter what the instrument is if the musician knows how to make it sound... Furtwängler achieves a miracle with an Italian orchestra that is not used to the German repertoire. The vocal cast is also fascinating. We are going to publish the complete "Ring" recorded in public in 1953. Although the sound quality is a bit rustic, the interpretation is an indispensable document to know for the lovers of the "Ring" and remains a legacy of the one we consider as the greatest conductor of the XXth century and maybe the greatest of all times...
