Galata Tower was built by Byzantine Emperor Anastasius in 528 as a lighthouse, but the Genoese rebuilt the tower in 1349. In the 1500s, the tower was damaged by an earthquake and repaired by Mimar Hayreddin. During the reign of Selim III, a bay window was added to the upper floor of the tower. When the tower suffered another fire in 1831, Mahmud II added two more floors to the tower. It was finally restored in 2020.
