WATCH: Washington Attorney General Nick Brown speaks after a federal judge in Seattle on Friday paused President Donald Trump’s executive order halting federal support for gender-affirming care for transgender youth under 19.
Brown spoke to reporters after the ruling as a crowd of supporters cheered behind him.
Brown filed a multi-state federal lawsuit on Feb. 7 that challenged Trump's decision, which threatened to cut federal funding to medical institutions providing gender-affirming care to those under 19. U.S. District Court Judge Lauren King granted a temporary restraining order Friday morning. Three doctors joined as plaintiffs in the suit, which was filed in the Western District of Washington.
Brown described President Trump's executive order as "clearly illegal and unusually cruel," stating it also directs unconstitutional criminal enforcement against medical professionals and patients involved in such care.
"This order is part of a larger political effort to strip away civil rights from entire communities. The president’s cruelty is on full display with this dehumanizing executive order, along with his disdain for the Constitution," Brown said. "His actions are harming Washington’s youth, parents, and health care providers."
