Watches in the Wild: The Road Through America is finally here. We set out on a cross-country adventure to track the rise and fall of the American watchmaking industry. Along the way, we discovered (and re-discovered) a resurgence in the fabric of the American horological consciousness. On The Road Through America, you'll see Danny Milton, James Stacey, and Cole Pennington travel from coast to coast, unraveling the past, present, and future of American watchmaking.
We present Episode Two, which takes us to the hallowed horological ground of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and its surrounding areas. We begin with a ride on an early 20th-century train through the Pennsylvania heartland to showcase the early days of standardized time – when the railroads played a pivotal role in how we perceive, measure, and understand time on little things called pocket watches. From there, we explore the original Hamilton factory which has since been converted to – you guessed it – condos. But kudos to the property managers for maintaining so much of the building's history – including the two massive clock towers. Walking around the place, you can almost still hear the watches ticking.
And it all culminates with a visit to a very special man, Roland G. Murphy, the proprietor and namesake behind RGM Watches – a little brand proving that American watchmaking lives on to this day.
