West Coast Main Line Opens to Scotland after Storm Eowyn: Class 47 Route Proving loco returns First freight train from Daventry through to Coatbridge Sunday Carlisle Variety 26 Jan 25 After missing the preparation for Storm Eowyn and the storm itself I decided to give it until today before visiting Carlisle station and see what was happening. Network Rail still had the lines north of Carlisle and Gretna Junction closed following the storm. However, a West Coast Class 47 was heading to Carstairs and back on Route Proving. The line reopened but without enough warning for the passenger operators. Avanti and TransPennine Express were running trains along the West Coast Main Line to Carlisle. Maybe not as many as usual but at least they were running. DRS brought an intermodal from Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (DRIFT) and it ran through to Coatbridge - a mix of Tesco and Russell / Cobelfreight boxes. In fact a Tesco intermodal actually preceded it - but that train had been sat in the yard waiting the line north to open. And of course Northern were running trains - although the Tyne Valley trains were from Hexham due to planned engineering works from there to Prudhoe and the Cumbrian Coast trains were restricted to Workington - Carlisle due to the aftermath of Friday's storm Eolwyn The times shown on clips are for guidance only and shouldn't be taken as definitive.
