Maafushi was badly damaged by the 2004 tsunami which impacted more than 100,000 of the Maldives' 300,000 inhabitants. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Mezzaluna Societies, supported by the Irish and American Red Cross organizations, began work on a sewer system on August 10, 2006. The International Federation also funded the construction of houses for those who lost theirs during the tsunami. Both programs were carried out in collaboration with commercial contractors and with the support and participation of the local community.
