Chapter 30: The Activities of the Pracetās
In this chapter, the Pracetās, the ten sons of King Prācīnabarhi, complete their long period of meditation and austerities under the ocean. When they emerge, they find that the earth has become overrun with trees. Out of anger, they start destroying the forests with fire and wind, threatening the balance of nature.
Seeing the destruction, the moon-god, Soma, intervenes and advises them to be merciful. He explains the importance of protecting nature and tells them about a beautiful woman named Māriṣā, who is a suitable wife for them. He describes her divine origin and how she was born from the union of the Apsarā Pramlocā and a sage. The Pracetās accept his advice and marry Māriṣā, with whom they later beget a great son, Dakṣa, who plays a significant role in creation.
The chapter emphasizes the principles of dharma, responsibility toward nature, and the continuation of creation through divine arrangements.
Chapter 31: Nārada Instructs King Prācīnabarhi
This chapter consists of sage Nārada’s profound teachings to King Prācīnabarhi. Since the king was deeply engaged in fruitive activities and sacrifices, Nārada wants to awaken him to the ultimate purpose of life—liberation from material bondage.
To illustrate the transient nature of material existence, Nārada narrates the allegorical story of Purañjana, a symbolic representation of the soul's journey through repeated births and deaths due to attachment to material life. In this story, Purañjana represents the conditioned soul, his city represents the body, and his experiences illustrate how the soul becomes entangled in material pleasures, leading to suffering and rebirth.
Nārada stresses the importance of devotion to Lord Viṣṇu as the means to attain liberation, urging the king to renounce his material attachments and focus on spiritual enlightenment. He explains that knowledge of the self and surrender to the Supreme Lord are the only paths to true freedom.
This chapter serves as a crucial philosophical teaching about karma, reincarnation, and the necessity of bhakti (devotion) in breaking free from the cycle of birth and death.
