In 2009, then-FIA President Max Mosely suggested that in 2010, teams could either spend as much as they want, or sign up to a voluntary cost cap. This would effectively create two rule sets in one series.
The teams didn't like this idea. So they protested by not signing up for 2010, and also talked about getting a breakaway league going. A bit like what happened in the FISA-FOCA war, althought this was called the FIA-FOTA Dispute... Which doesn't sound as cool.
So what happened then? Well, it seemed to be brewing much sooner than we thought...
