噶瑪蘭為台灣原住民的一支，原文發音為Kavalan，意指居住在平原的人類之意。
台灣東北角的南端是一片美麗的蘭陽平原，在這片土地上有著噶瑪蘭族人的足跡，更流傳著一個美麗的傳說：海龍王的女兒噶瑪蘭公主愛上了勇猛的龜山將軍，而在違背了海龍王的傳統禮法之下，龍王決定將公主永遠禁足在龍宮內，而將龜山將軍趕出龍宮不得回頭…。蘭陽風光美不勝收，美麗的傳說仍然在今日流傳著，為這片土地再添上一層瑰麗的神祕色彩。
第一段：樂曲開始由高音笙吹奏出悠揚的音調，接著優美的旋律象徵著噶瑪蘭公主的美，述說著美麗的傳說。
第二段：躍動的節奏代表著龜山將軍的英姿煥發與後世人們的傳頌。
第三段：優美主題再現，展開了一段動人的愛情。
第四段：噶瑪蘭族人在蘭陽平原上的開墾及繁榮的開始。

Kavalan ("people living on the plain") are an indigenous people of Taiwan. On the southern tip of Taiwan’s northeastern corner is the beautiful Lanyang plain, rich with the Kavalan people's history and stories. This work was inspired by the legend of Princess Kavalan: The Sea Dragon King's daughter, Princess Kavalan, fell in love with the brave General Guishan. This was contrary to the plan of the Sea Dragon King, who had arranged for her to marry someone else. The king decided to forbid the princess from leaving the palace forever and to drive out General Guishan. The heart-broken princess committed suicide to demonstrate her love for the general. The beauty of Lanyang and these legends still exist today, adding to the mystery of this land.
First section: The music begins with the melodious notes of the soprano sheng. This is followed by a beautiful melody that describes the beauty of Princess Kavalan as the story unfolds.
Second section: The pulsing rhythm represents the heroic General Guishan and the hope of future generations.
Third section: The beautiful theme reappears again as the princess and the general fall in love.
Fourth section: Reclaiming the land and the prosperity of the Kavalan people on Lanyang.
