Here is a link to go on our ride at Elkins on the New Tygart Flyer Train https://youtu.be/AP9mpmzZl2k Here is the second part of that ride https://youtu.be/Cb-gNSEKhzM Thumbnail on this video is B&O 6179 a 2-10-2 Class S1. The B&O owned 125 of these 2-10-2 steam locomotives numbered from 6100 to 6224. They were built by Baldwin and Lima 1923 thru 1926. This type of locomotive was called a Santa Fe type. The very first 2-10-2 was built in 1903 for the AT&SF #915. The last 2-10-2 ever built was for Reading in 1931 #3010 to 3019, they were also the heaviest ever built weighing in at 451,000 pounds. The last 2-10-2 ever in service was for Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range #514, it's last run was an excursion September 29, 1962. By 1919 the 2-10-2 locomotives were the dominant freight locomotives in the US. It was considered equal in pulling power to a 2-6-6-2. However because of the 5 coupled driving axles having a long rigid wheel base, small drivers were needed to compensate, with one or two axles having wheels which were blind. (no flange). Also the heavy main driving rod required heavy counterbalancing which was never perfected because of the small drivers. Thus at speeds over 30 these unbalanced forces tended to want to destroy both locomotive and track. Here is a link to the museum's web site.
