On July 4, 2009, several lecturers from the finance department of a Chinese university gathered to work overtime to manage and monitor the school's finances and expenses from the previous semester. One lecturer, Tam Shing-fai, 43, was scheduled to attend but was missing. At 11 a.m., a colleague named Ma tried to call Shing-fai's cell phone but received no response. Despite the heavy workload, Ma was not too worried at first. He thought Shing-fai might be taking care of his family's dog, which had a skin disease. Shing-fai had planned to take the dog to the vet, so Ma assumed that was where he was.
On July 5, the university's finance department held a meeting, but Shing-fai failed to attend for the second time. Ma tried calling his cell phone again, but no one answered. Unfortunately, Ma did not have Shing-fai's home phone number, so he could not contact him that way. By July 6, Shing-fai had been absent from work for two days and had not contacted any of his colleagues. Eventually, one of his colleagues reported the situation to the finance department. Shing-fai's supervisors had his home landline number, so they called there, but like his cell phone, no one answered.
They called the library where his 33-year-old wife, Helen Tong Yan, worked. Library staff confirmed that she had also been absent from work without permission. The couple lived in Zhongshan, Guangdong Province, China, and had been married for 11 years. They have two daughters: the eldest, Tam Hiu-man, 10, and the youngest, Tam Hiu-ying, 7. Despite their financial difficulties and living in an abandoned recycling station on Waju South Road, they are known to be kind, cheerful, and positive people with well-behaved children. Shing-fai often takes his daughters into town to have fun, leading some to believe that the family went on vacation together. However, something unexpected happened that prevented them from returning home.
