The OM611 inline 4-cylinder turbodiesel replaced the atmospheric prechamber OM604 in 1997. The new engine was the first Mercedes diesel with Common Rail. Debuted at the W202 C-Class in 1998. It was also installed on the E-Class W210, Vito and Sprinter.
Mercedes diesel is very reliable and can easily pass even 1 million km. Many of these engines die because of owners who switch to austerity mode, which implies the use of the cheapest oil and consumables.
The crankshaft of the OM611 engine and especially its successor OM646 is notorious for cranking the main bearings, usually the second and fourth. It is worth noting that such a nuisance arises mainly on Sprinter engines, and many of the same engines from passenger Mercedes did not encounter such a problem.
