After the assassination of Caesar there was a massive power vacuum within the Roman Republic. This was soon filled by two ambitious figures. Octavian, Caesar's adoptive heir, and Mark Anthony, Caesar's trusted ally and general. There was a third guy too I'm pretty sure but I forget... Anyways, the gang engage in conflict across the Republic, making names for themselves while they hunt down the killers of Caesar. After winning Octavian and Mark Anthony divided the empire between the two.
Octavian went on to consolidate his position within Rome as the successor to Caesar, while Mark Anthony consolidated control over the Eastern provinces while starting a love affair with Cleopatra. Eventually Mark Anthony and Cleopatra put forwards Caesarion as the true biological successor to Caesar. This was too much to take, and Octavian and Mark Anthony went to war.
At the Battle of Actium Octavian defeated Mark Anthony, leading to Cleopatra and Mark Anthony committing suicide in Alexandria. Octavian then went on to become Rome's first emperor, changing his name to Augustus because it sounds way cooler and ending the turbulent times the Roman Empire was experiencing. But what if this changed. What if Augustus lost the Roman Civil war? What if Mark Anthony and Cleopatra actually manage to install Caesarion as Caesar's true heir after killing Octavian.
