Ever since shonen anime took the world by storm in the early 2000s, fans have put their friendships on the line to debate one simple question: who is the strongest anime character? Some say Luffy, others swear by Naruto, and most fans aren’t willing to change their minds. However, one thing many can agree on is that most of these characters pay homage to a single icon: Goku, the protagonist of the beloved series Dragon Ball Z. But what makes Goku such a memorable character is the same trait that makes him so strong—which is his unwavering desire to protect the people he cares about. But that made me wonder: What if Goku had never been sent to Earth and never developed his love for those around him? What if, instead, he had been raised by someone cold and sinister, like Frieza?
