Weeks after the attack on Winterfell, the Hound kneels before Lady Catelyn and Arya Stark as he has finished investigating everything around the kingdom. Beside him is Ser Davos Seaworth.
Catelyn: So, have you learned everything you needed, Sandor?
Hound: Aye, seems like the Skinflayers had been planning to betray you for some time. According to some of the people I talked to at the Dreadfort, Bolton men sacked Winterfell, not Ironborn.
Catelyn: That is ill news. So all this time since we marched up the Twins and Robbs marriage was a deception. They had been playing us all this time. But what was that foolish business in the South?
Davos: King Stannis had fully intended to take men back to the Stormlands with him. As King Robb promised, he was gathering volunteers. Lord Bolton had promised him men from his house and several others…I’m ashamed to admit it, but they agreed to a secret pact where Stannis would recognize Lord Bolton as ruler of the North if he provided him with men.
Catelyn: Surprised. Are you telling me that Lord Stannis tried to aid a turncloak?
Davos: My lady, I understand this looks bad, but you must understand Lord Stannis was desperate and this is quite unlike him.
Catelyn: He used to say one good act does not wash out the bad nor does one bad wash out the good. I knew him as a just man.
Davos: Yes, but it seems like Bolton has no loyalty to any king because he betrayed us, and our forces were routed. I escaped with a few men to Storm’s End.
Hound: As for King Robb, seems like betraying one king wasn’t enough. According to some reports from the Rivermen, Lord Bolton escaped to the Riverlands and was tasked with holding a ford, but he secretly allowed Tyrell Bannermen to come in and wipe his forces out. Though no one was able to find your son's body. I’m sorry, my lady.
Catelyn: All of that while he attacked us at Winterfell. All of this sounds so foolish and mad. It’s hard to believe this happened.
Davos: Aye, I wish it were different too. But, I suppose the best we can do now is make the most of a rotted onion.
Catelyn nods and considers everything that happened. Although she cannot forgive Stannis for his attempted coup, she must also consider the situation carefully. The North and Riverlands are no longer an independent kingdom and now the Lannisters and Tyrells sit on the throne. They had just fought a war against both factions while there was peace, the North was in a poor state.
Not only did they lose their king, but they must now deal with wilding settlers. Arya is now the lady of Winterfell and she will need all the swords and advisors she can get. Reluctantly, she offers Davos and his few companions shelter in the North, along with Princess Shireen and Edric Storm from Essos.
Catelyn focuses on helping settle the wildlings. They agree that the wildlings can live as independent people in the Gift under the guidance of their chieftains.
However, they must obey the laws of the North and cease all raiding, bride stealing, and handing over hostages. These are stiff terms, but Mance agrees and begins inviting more Wildlings across the Wall.
With them, they bring news of White Walkers marching beyond the Wall which are confirmed by Jon Snow.
During one such supply drop, Catelyn personally oversees the progress of the wildlings integrating themselves into the Gift. Thankfully there are fewer and fewer instances of trouble. But as she finishes dropping off the food to the wildlings, a woman approaches her.
This one is in all red and looks nothing like the unkept Free Folk. Catelyn feels a chill run down her body as she recognizes the piercing gaze of Melisandre.
Catelyn: Lady Melisandre. I’m surprised to see you here in the Gift. I hope you are comfortable enough in Castle Black.
Melisandre: The Lord-Commander has been an adequate host, but my comfort comes from the Lord of Light. He is the reason I am here now. I am certain his grace talked about the White Walkers.
Catelyn: I’ve heard and rest assured I have been making preparations for it.
Melisandre: Good, the nights grow colder in the Wall and the flames do not warm me as they once did. If you do not want that darkness to consume the North, the Wall must stand at all costs. But there is another vision I had, one concerning your homeland.
Catelyn: What of Riverrun?
Melisandre: In the flames, I saw a mountain, the Great Mountains of the Moon. From its peaks, I heard a wolf howling. As its cries echoed across the land, a great hand reached out and gripped the Riverlands.
Catelyn frowns, her rational mind fighting against the cryptic warning. Yet, the words seem to burn themselves into her.
