Episode 1, titled "What If... the Hulk Fought the Mech Avengers?" pays homage to classic 80s cartoons like Power Rangers and Transformers. The episode revives Tony Stark’s long-haired look from the 1994 Iron Man animated series. The plot showcases Hulk battling mech-suited Avengers in a callback to Tony's Hulkbuster suits. Familiar moments abound, such as Sam Wilson running beside Bruce Banner, echoing “On your left” from Endgame. The episode highlights Sam’s therapy sessions, reminiscent of Steve Rogers' counseling in The Winter Soldier.
A major twist emerges when Bruce Banner bombards himself with gamma radiation, accidentally creating the monstrous Kaiju-like "Apex." In Episode 2, "What If... Agatha Went to Hollywood?" Agatha Harkness takes center stage as a Golden Age Hollywood actress planning to harness the celestial Tiamut's power. Stark Pictures, helmed by Howard Stark, serves as the backdrop, complete with Edwin Jarvis as his assistant. The episode incorporates clever Easter eggs, including Kingo from Eternals joining Agatha's film project, showcasing Bollywood-style dance numbers, and Hollywoodland signs referencing real-world history.
Agatha's nefarious intentions unfold as she seeks to drain Kingo's powers during their cosmic-themed film. With visual callbacks to Eternals and witty wordplay, the episode enriches Agatha’s backstory.
