Amplifier modelers and modeling amps have become increasingly popular over the last few years due to massive advancements in technology which have led to the rise of home studios.
It's now possible to download plug-ins for your DAW, whether it's Pro Tools or Garageband, and the software can actually sound quite good, although, the quality will never be as good as the analog equipment.
With that in mind, amp modelers and modeling amps are part of this technological revolution in which guitarists now can imitate some of the most popular amplifier-cabinet combinations on the market.
For instance, there is the Line 6 POD, the AXE FX-III from Fractal Audio, or the Yamaha THR10x.
Whether you should use an amp modeler or a modeling amp is up to you and your personal preferences. There is a certain amount of sacrifice in sound quality one has to endure to enjoy the benefits of an amp modeler or modeling amp.
