Gender is a social construct. When I tell you to think of a man, you’re not thinking of chromosomes or genitals. Gender has a deep relationship with speculative fiction, if you break down our understanding of society or advance it so far with technological innovation, why would our concepts of gender remain the same?
Sci-fi as a genre has long been a brilliant tool of social commentary and criticism. The relationship between gender and sci-fi is very expansive, so I want to limit myself to just three works today, two of which I’ve actually covered previously. I’ll be talking about Dune, NieR Automata, and Alien.
