Shutdown is a Polyvagal state of immobilization caused by the dorsal vagal area of the brain stem. It is different from freeze, which is a mixed state of immobilization and mobilization. I discuss experiencing the shutdown state, building up the ventral vagal safety pathways, and slowly coming out of it by reducing stimulation, being patient with oneself, and finding a safe co-regulator. Techniques may vary for each person, but the point is to feel into the shutdown state and be with the feelings, which can be done through various mediums such as art or meditation. The process of coming out of shutdown is slow and cannot be forced.
