*Thermistor:*
Thermistor is a semiconductor device, whose resistance changes with the temperature. Compared to normal resistors, the change in the resistance with the temperature is large for the thermistors. And that is why they are commonly used in temperature sensing applications.
Types of Thermistor:There are two types of thermistor.
1) NTC Thermistor
2) PTC Thermistor
*NTC Thermistor:*
These thermistors have negative temperature coefficient of resistance. (with increase in temperature, their resistance reduces)
_Material used:_ Cobalt, Nickel, Iron, Copper and Manganese
_Application:_ Temperature Sensing, Inrush current liming, level sensing
*PTC Thermistor:*
These thermistors have positive temperature coefficient of resistance. (with increase in temperature, their resistance increases)
_Material used:_ Barium, Lead, Strontium titanate
_Applications:_
PTC Thermistors are mainly used in applications where a sudden change in the resistance is required with temperature. Such as over current protection, soft starter circuits.Apart from that the Silicon PTC thermistors are also used in a temperature sensing application (as they have linear change in the resistance with temperature)
The NTC thermistors have non-linear response for a change in the resistance with temperature. In this video, the hardware techniques to improve the linearity are also explained. Along with that the effect of self-heating in the thermistor is also discussed.
