Hampi, once the magnificent capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, stands as a captivating reminder of India’s rich and storied past. In the 16th century, it was one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the world, rivalling the grandeur of Rome and Beijing. Portuguese traveller Domingo Paes was awestruck by the scale and prosperity of Hampi, vividly describing the vast empire of Krishna Deva Raya, its majestic temples, and bustling markets. Among these, the Virupaksha Temple, still active today, is renowned for an ancient optical marvel, while the Vithala Temple is celebrated for its musical pillars and the iconic stone chariot.

During Krishna Deva Raya’s reign, Hampi flourished with remarkable defences, sophisticated water systems, and architectural brilliance that showcased the empire's power and prosperity. However, the city’s glory was short-lived, as it was later sacked by neighbouring kingdoms, leading to widespread destruction. Today, the ruins of Hampi offer a haunting glimpse into its illustrious past, with structures like the Queen’s Bath, the Kamal Mahal, and the towering Mahanavami Dibba standing as silent witnesses to its former grandeur.

Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Hampi continues to draw visitors from around the world, who come to marvel at its breathtaking beauty, its architectural feats, and its rich history that still echoes through the ruins.
