This journey took me to a monastic college in Mon State, Myanmar, a major center for Buddhist education where young novices and monks from various parts of the region come to study. I had the chance to follow them on their morning alms round, experiencing their daily life, which differs significantly from that of Thai temples.

The first thing that surprised me was that monks in Myanmar eat breakfast before going on their alms round, unlike in Thailand, where monks collect alms first and then eat afterward. Another fascinating aspect was that locals offer only plain rice during almsgiving. I couldn’t help but wonder—why don’t they include other types of food? Is this an ancient tradition unique to this region?

Another key difference from Thai temples is that there are no temple boys (dek wat) here. The monks handle everything themselves, from cleaning the monastery and washing their robes to cooking and taking care of temple duties. Unlike in Thailand, where young novices or lay helpers assist with daily tasks, Mon monks rely solely on themselves.

Despite the differences in monastic practices, the dedication and faith of the Mon people in Buddhism remain as strong as ever. This experience gave me a unique glimpse into a lesser-known aspect of Myanmar’s monastic life—one that I had never seen before. It was truly an eye-opening experience.
