How much should I spend on a kilt?
There is a place for bargain kilts. When you are just getting started wearing the kilt, only you can decide what is an affordable kilt within your budget.
How much do kilts cost?
Kilts can be as cheap as $50 online, or as much as $1,000 for a custom woven tartan made into an eight-yard custom wool kilt.
The cliché "you get what you pay for" is absolutely true when it comes to kilts. Some men will save up and go for the more expensive kilt. Others like to start cheap and easy. Starting out with a cheaper kilt is a decent idea if you are feeling unsure and just want to dip your toe in the pool.
Our basic advice is to buy the best kilt you feel you can afford and don't worry as much about the other accessories at first. You have plenty of time to build a kilt wardrobe, assuming you decide you love wearing the kilt regularly.
What can you expect from a kilt made in Asia?
In a nutshell...a cheaper price, but low quality materials and construction. We have seen better utility kilts coming out of Pakistan recently. However we do not feel so confident about traditional tartan kilts made overseas. We go into some detail in this video, but expect issues such as:
- off the peg fit and lengths (not custom, so not precise)
- thin loose-weave wool, or more commonly blended synthetic fabric
- interesting color choices
- thinner leather
- loose stitching
- uneven quality of construction
If you are interested in an overseas kilt, do a little homework. See if there are reviews. Check out online kilt groups and forums to see if others have been satisfied with their purchases. Of course we suggest this for ANY kilt purchase.
Remember that a cheap kilt may be just fine if your expectations are low, or your needs immediate. For instance, if you just want something to dress up in for a Renaissance Fair or a Convention. Just be realistic about how good the kilt will look and how well it will hold up over time.
