Tartu (in southern Estonian, Tarto) is an Estonian city located in the southeast of the country, in Tartu County. It is the second most populous city in the country with about 93,000 inhabitants in 2016, only behind the capital Tallinn. The development of Tartu has been linked to the very history of southern Estonia. The first mention of Tartu is believed to date from 1030 and refers to the siege and capture of the fortification by Kievan Rus'.3 In the Baltic crusades of the early 13th century, Tartu was captured by the Livonian Brothers and turned into a the capital of the bishopric of Dorpat (1224-1558). Subsequently it has been under the control of the Republic of the Two Nations, the Swedish Empire and the Russian Empire, until Estonia proclaimed its independence in 1918 and imposed the current place name.
