As a C6 quadriplegic who absolutely loves adventure and travel, but safely, I wanted to celebrate my 40th birthday party with incredible women in my life in a tropical location with rain forest and beaches. I also didn't want to fly halfway across the world.
I've always known about Wheel the World travel company, but I decided to take the leap and create this incredible trip for an epic event. We spent 16 days in Costa Rica with the local accessible travel company, Il Viaggio. They were absolutely fantastic with amazing accessible vans, accessible adventures, well planned out itinerary, amazing guides, and drivers.
We went ziplining, scuba diving, offloading in the rain forest, surfing at the beach, and much much more. It truly was a trip of a lifetime and very wheelchair accessible if you are looking for a great adventure close to home in Central America if you live in the United States.
The really cool thing about Costa Rica is that they disbanded their army in 1949 and are really like the "Switzerland" of Central America focusing on tourism and safe traveling.
I really worked for this trip and planned for months. Such a cool trip that people could literally take my itinerary and make it their own trip. I'd be more than happy to help anyone!
I'm going to make a series of videos of different adventures and the one you see here today is of ziplining. No one really could tell me the exact process of how a quadriplegic of ziplining behind the scenes. I kept finding videos in Costa Rica in Arenal of wheelchair users zipping down the line, but not how they got up to the platform, were transfer, etc.
I'm a huge researching couldn't find anything. So, I've decided to take it upon myself to do a lot of the behind the scenes videos of different adventures and hope to do more with Wheel the World in the coming months and years to show people the exact definition of what accessibility really means and how to safely go on adventures.
