X KB 726 from the 419th Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), was on a mission to take out rail yards in Cambrai, France. Aboard the Lancaster were close friends Andrew Mynarski and Pat Brophy. The Germans were prepared to counter the night raid with their powerful anti-aircraft cannons and heavy night fighters. A Junkers Ju-88 attacked turning the plane into an inferno. When ordered to bail, Mynarski spotted his friend trapped in the tail. Mynarski ignored the flames in the rear of the fuselage and tried to save his friend, Pat Brophy. This incredibly brave chapter of WW2 earned Mynarski the Victoria Cross.
