Facelifts are meant to refresh a car’s design, but sometimes they do more harm than good. From oversized grilles to awkward styling choices, some facelifts alienate fans and turn once-beloved models into controversial redesigns. One of the most infamous examples? The 2019 BMW 7 Series, which introduced a massive kidney grille that many compared to a beaver’s teeth—far from the elegant heritage of the model.
Toyota’s 2017 Prius facelift took a functional design and turned it into a polarizing mess, while Honda’s 2002 NSX facelift lost its iconic pop-up headlights, stripping away its charm and hurting sales. Chevrolet also stumbled with the 2019 Camaro facelift, confusing fans with a mismatched grille that was so poorly received, the brand had to quickly rework it. Other notable missteps, like the softened Jaguar F-Type and Porsche’s awkward Panamera facelift, prove that when it comes to design changes, less is often more.
