Mount Rainier looms at 14,410 feet, its glacier-covered slopes both mesmerizing and deadly. Known as Tahoma to Indigenous people, this active stratovolcano sits just 59 miles from Seattle. Every year, around 10,000 people attempt to climb Mount Rainier. While the vast majority make it back down safely, the mountain claims lives almost every season. Its steep slopes, hidden crevasses, and sudden storms have led to countless accidents, and in some cases, deadly falls.
