The American Civil War predominantly took place over 4 years from 1861-1865 with Robert E. Lee's surrender being considered the official surrender of the Confederate States of America. Lee's surrender to Ulysses S. Grant in April of 1865 may be the official timestamp of the "surrender" of the Confederacy and the ideas that went along with it, but there was still much tension in the post-war strewn states of America.
Former American Civil War Museum Historian John Coski leads a discussion that examines the events of May, 1865 and after in an attempt to answer the question, "When did the Civil War end?".
