The Bengal Provincial Railway Company (BPR) was registered in 1890. This private line, formerly known as Tarakeshwar Magra Railway, was opened in March 1895, (with a section opened in November 1894); a short 33 mile 55km)) 2ft 6in/762mm narrow gauge(NG) railway from Magra (in Hooghly district) to Tarakeshwar, an important place of pilgrimage for the Shiva sect. A short further extension from Magra to Tribeni, 2.2 miles(3.5km), opened in 1914. The Dasghara-Jamalpurgunj Railway, from Dasghara to Jamalpurgunj, 8.3 miles(13.4km), opened in 1917, owned by the BPR as an extension to the BPR .
