Andrew calls in to make the case that religion itself is neutral - neither inherently good or bad. He compares it to technology, which can be used to help or harm depending on the person wielding it. He states religion is fundamental to human existence. The hosts push back on multiple fronts. Matt argues religion inevitably causes harm to individuals and societies in ways secular humanism does not. When Andrew proposes an ideal religious theocracy could work if practiced correctly, Matt counters that the very idea of a theocracy is problematic. As they explore Andrew's claims further, he contradicts himself on whether Christianity and its rules align with principles of secular humanism. Tension builds around the implications of his view that more religious societies are better for people. The hosts get increasingly frustrated with what they see as Andrew's inconsistent reasoning and tendency to make assertions without evidence. There are some more heated crosstalk moments near the end around the issues of Jesus as a secular humanist and appropriate grounds for divorce.
