1,400 American heavy bombers, 950 fighters, and 15,000 airmen had been assembled. Their payload: 2,500 tons of high explosives bound for the heart of the German capital.
It was a secret order from the highest American ranks - one that some Army Air Force commanders could barely stomach.
This wasn't going to be precision bombing of military targets. This was going to be something else entirely.
