Alang is the site of the world's largest ship breaking yard, once a grey and uninviting beach north of Bombay in India, that's become a massive graveyard for old ships from all over the world. Thousands of men wreck and salvage super tankers, container ships and ocean liners at Alang, including some notable ships like the Seawise Giant, which was the longest ship ever built; and the Oriental Nicety, known for a major oil spill in Alaska. In 1993, 60 Minutes took viewers to the mesmerising world of the Alang shipyard, a story beautifully captured by legendary cameraman Phil Donoghue. Yesterday, Phil died after a short illness. He was 80. Following a lengthy career at Channel 9 News, in late 1978, Phil joined 60 MINUTES. He was the first cameraman hired to work on the new current affairs program. For the next 22 years Phil travelled the world for 60 MINUTES, filming some of the most spectacular pictures seen on Australian television. From dodging bullets in war zones, to mixing with world leaders and Hollywood celebrities, every story Phil shot was distinctive. One of many examples of his fine work was "Passage to India". It’s no surprise Phil won a prestigious Australian Cinematographers Society Golden Tripod Award for the story. *Passage to India (1993)* ► Subscribe: http://9Soci.al/chmP50wA97J ► WATCH Full Episodes on 9NOW: https://9now.app.link/uNP4qBkmN6 *MORE VIDEOS like this one* ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKzM9R21LZc ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHeHgYgRVD0 ► https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GB_2qSW5b4 FOLLOW 60 Minutes Australia ► Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/60minutes9 ► TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@60minutes9 ► Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/60Minutes9 ABOUT 60 Minutes Australia 60 Minutes Australia have been telling the world’s greatest stories for over 40 years.
