Today I put the T-72BU and the T-72M2E side by side and compare them. They are both solid, top tier Era 3 heavies in @WorldofTanksModernArmor but this comes down to what you would prefer:
If you want armour, then go with the T-72BU.
If you want a better weapon system, then go with the T-72M2E.
