The Whippet was the result of selective crossbreeding between Greyhounds and Terriers in England.
The breed’s ancestors helped poach rabbits and provided gambling entertainment in snap dog contents,
In which the winner was the dog that could snap up the most rabbits within an enclosure in the shortest time.
The Whippet is still known by the nickname it earned in those days: the poor man’s racehorse.
Some of the Whippet’s talent include: hunting, sighting, watchdog, racing, agility and lure coursing.
The first Whippet to be registered with the AKC was a dog named Jack Dempsey, in 1888.
