On a guest WiFi network, devices are only allowed to access the internet. They aren’t allowed to: -Utilize other devices on the network (e.g. printers or wireless speakers) -Access shared media on the network -Discover or communicate with other devices on the network (e.g. laptops or mobile devices) In contrast, when a device is connected to a regular WiFi network, there aren’t many restrictions in terms of what it can do on the network. This is why guest WiFi networks should be used to provide a connection to devices (or people) that you don’t want to give access to the rest of your network. A good example would be a contractor or someone who is providing a service in your home. If they need internet access you can provide them with the password for the guest WiFi account. They don’t need access to all the other discoverable devices on your network. Guest WiFi networks are also effective at limiting the impact of devices that may have a virus. If a device with a virus is connected to a regular WiFi network, it may be able to spread the virus to the other devices on the network that it can communicate with. If this device is connected to a guest WiFi network, the device is essentially quarantined and unable to affect the rest of your network. Guest WiFi networks are a useful tool that can be used to protect your network, and they aren’t used nearly enough. I challenge you to set up a guest WiFi network in your home so your devices are better protected! Conclusion If you have any questions about guest WiFi networks, please leave a comment below.
