The first cameras in the world (believe it or not) had people inside of ‘em to create the image.
During World War II, Japanese camera brands advanced in optics for military use, like Nikon’s rangefinder for the Yamato battleship. After the war, U.S. economic support helped Japan’s industries recover, while German camera factories struggled. The “Kaizen” philosophy of continuous improvement boosted manufacturing efficiency, benefiting camera makers. In the 1950s, Japan focused on SLR cameras, which became popular with war photographers due to their accuracy. Nikon’s Nikkor lenses gained global recognition after outperforming German lenses in quality. By the 1970s, while Kodak ignored digital cameras, Japanese companies like Sony, Canon, and Nikon embraced the technology, securing industry dominance.
