This week, I dive deep into the incredibly unique literary culture of Exarcheia, a neighbourhood in Athens known for its blend of history, politics, and an impressive abundance of bookstores. In a world that often tells us physical books and reading are on the decline, Exarcheia stands in contrast, with its thriving community of passionate readers and booksellers.
Why are so many bookstores flourishing in such a small area? What drives booksellers to be part of this community? I answer these questions by exploring the heart of the neighbourhood, meeting its bookstore owners, and delving into the area’s distinct character.
This video is my first attempt at a documentary-style film, and it’s a steep learning curve. From struggling with interviews to dealing with self-doubt, it was a process full of challenges. The point of this channel, Grace Asks, is to help challenge my personal limits and not take myself too seriously. I don’t know if I succeed but I definitely feel stretched and proud of the result.
