Buffy the Vampire Slayer had all the markings of an also-ran in 1997. It was a mid-season replacement that was left to die with a shoestring budget, but it became part of a late-nineties ironic, deconstructivist phenomenon (along with Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, the X-Files, and many more). A cast with ungodly chemistry and a creator with a chip on his shoulder made the material work, despite the network's lack of faith.
Buffy has since become a go-to for academic scholars of television and media with multiple academic conferences, journals, books, and a Buffy+ Studies organization of scholars dedicated to parsing the series.
This year marks the 10 year anniversary of my first "Buffy" publication, and with Gen Z and even Gen Alpha rediscovering the series, it's time to go back.
