About This Story : Activists and politicians have blamed former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud for the tragic events in Sambhal, which resulted in the killing of at least five Muslims. This violence erupted after Uttar Pradesh Police opened fire on locals protesting a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in the town. The survey followed a petition claiming that a temple had been demolished to construct the mosque.
Critics argue that Chandrachud’s Gyanvapi judgment opened the door for challenges under the Places of Worship Act, 1991, fueling further controversy.
In the latest episode of our podcast, former CJI Chandrachud explains to Barkha why he allowed the Gyanvapi survey.
