In this video we once again start our yearly task of collecting all the firewood we have gathered during the winter and spring to cut, split, and stack them. My plan this year was to keep it simple and just collect the firewood with a wheelbarrow as we attempt to use our 70-year-old two wheel tractor last year and crashed it. When inspecting the land, I changed my mind and tock our Fiat 440 tractor instead. Watch the video to see if that was a good idea.
To have a stack of firewood is like having money in the bank. This is something everybody should have (at least those with a fireplace). The log contained stored sunlight or energy that can be released by burning it. It is almost like a battery. On our farm, homestead, or smallholding we are dependent on our firewood as our hundred-year-old house (built in 1918) is cold and drafty. Without our firewood we would get in financial trouble as the energy bill would be really high.
Cutting down firewood also has a dual purpose as we also clear our overgrown fields for our grazing animals. This brings back the original farm landscape of grass hills that Norway is so famous for.
Our gold with this farm is to make it into a sustainable self-sufficient paradise for us and our kids. We see that path the world is on, and we don’t really want to be apart of it more than we need. We want to surround us with clean nature, animals and home-grown product like vegetable, eggs, meat, and fruit. We want to know where our food came from and that the animals, we eat have hade a good life.
