In 1954, by decree of the USSR government, work began at the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant on the design of a utilitarian all-wheel drive van, which was named UAZ 450. The car would be manufactured to meet the needs of the Soviet army in ambulances and to provide state trade workers with small delivery vans.
The newly created van, the serial production of which began in 1958, would receive the nicknames Loaf, Tadpole and Tablet. It became so popular that it is still produced. However, there have been practically no changes in the design of this car over these many decades of production.
